About Merkl

Merkl is the leading financial infrastructure for onchain money streaming. Finance is moving onchain: stablecoins, tokenized stocks and funds, onchain payments. Each of them comes with money that has to stream to someone: dividends to shareholders, interest to stablecoin holders, salaries to employees. Merkl is how that money gets there. Stablecoin issuers, fintechs, neobanks, tokenized funds, and DeFi protocols use us to calculate and send yield, dividends, rewards, and payouts.

Since July 2023, we have distributed $1.8B+ to 5M+ wallets across 60+ chains, for 1000+ companies including Coinbase, PayPal, Robinhood, Kraken, MetaMask, and Uniswap. We are independent, and the global leader in our category.

We're looking for a Product Engineer to help build the next phase of Merkl.

Team

Merkl is a small team of 20 people. If you join the team, you will not only learn with and from us but also be deeply involved in product design and the research we are conducting. In a team this size, there's no hiding behind tickets: you'll own product surfaces used by 200,000+ monthly users and integrated by Coinbase, Uniswap, and Trust Wallet.

Why this role exists

We want an engineer who takes a problem and a proposed direction from the PM, challenges it when something doesn't make sense, then owns the full execution from UX details, interactions, API, deployment, without needing hand-holding at every step.

You're the person who pushes back on a solution when you see a better way. You're also the person who, once aligned, ships the whole thing end-to-end with polish. You care about craft and you ship fast.

Missions & responsibilities

As a Product Engineer at Merkl, you will be at the heart of our product's evolution. You will own features end to end, from the interface to the API routes and the database, whether they are hosted by us or embedded on our clients' websites.

Specifically, your responsibilities will include:

  • Implement stunning, functional frontend interfaces based on designs from Figma, ensuring pixel-perfect execution and seamless integration.
  • Work creatively to build innovative features even without detailed design specs, taking ownership of the user experience.
  • Integrate with backend systems and APIs, ensuring smooth data flow and flawless feature performance across platforms.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Managers and Designers to translate product requirements into intuitive, high-performance frontend features.
  • Debug and troubleshoot issues across both frontend and backend, with a solid understanding of backend systems, allowing you to resolve issues without relying heavily on other developers.
  • Optimize performance for fast, responsive web applications, ensuring a smooth user experience across all devices and platforms.
  • Work in a cross-functional team with designers, PMs, and backend developers to deliver high-quality features on time.
  • Stay up to date with the latest trends in frontend development, bringing fresh ideas and solutions to the table.

What we offer

By joining the Merkl team, you will be part of one of the most innovative and fast-growing teams in onchain finance. We offer the opportunity to work with an ambitious team, shipping quickly and making an impact in the industry. For full-time positions, we provide:

  • A highly stimulating intellectual environment: You'll collaborate with some of the best researchers and engineers in onchain finance, on systems that move real money for Coinbase, Robinhood, and PayPal. Our stack is solid web2 engineering (TypeScript, Go, Postgres, Kubernetes) applied to financial infrastructure.
  • An AI-native way of working: AI coding agents, whichever one you prefer, and our own MCP servers are part of everyone's daily workflow. You get the best tools, and the time they save goes into understanding more of the system, not only shipping more code.
  • Growth and future opportunities: Be part of an independent, rapidly scaling company, working on the infrastructure that shapes the future of finance.
  • Competitive salary: We offer a competitive compensation package with flexible working hours, ensuring a healthy work-life balance.
  • Equipment stipend: We provide you with the tools and devices you need to optimize your work environment and fit your working style.
  • Team retreats: Every year, you'll have the chance to join the team on retreats to reflect on our journey, plan for the future, and bond while having fun in exciting locations.

You are

You're a skilled and passionate engineer who thrives in fast-paced, innovative environments. We're looking for someone who is:

  • Autonomous and opinionated. You don't need a detailed spec to start building. You have opinions about what good UX looks like and you're not afraid to push back on a design or propose an alternative.
  • Passionate about creating seamless user experiences. You care about the details that separate a product that works from a product that feels great.
  • A strong executor with opinions. You take direction well, but you're not passive. When a proposed solution has a flaw, you flag it and offer an alternative. Once aligned, you execute with speed and quality without needing check-ins at every step.
  • A fast learner and problem-solver: You are intellectually curious, can quickly grasp new technologies and concepts, and have a knack for finding innovative solutions to complex UX and UI issues.
  • Driven by data and startup values: You iterate quickly, love testing new ideas (even the most unconventional ones), and are excited to implement them.
  • Collaborative: You work well in a small, agile team where everyone's contributions are valued.
  • Passionate about innovation and impact: You are driven by pushing new ideas, concepts, and products to broad market adoption.
  • Curious about finance. You want to understand how money moves, from a dividend to a stablecoin yield. No crypto background needed: you'll learn the onchain side with us, fast.

You have

  • 3+ years of experience building web products, with a strong portfolio of production-ready applications you shipped end to end.
  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript and modern frontend frameworks (React, Vue.js, Angular, etc.).
  • Expertise in implementing designs from Figma into functional, responsive web applications.
  • Creative problem-solving skills, with the ability to build features from scratch without detailed design specs.
  • Familiarity with backend technologies (Node.js, Python, etc.) and the ability to debug and troubleshoot issues across both frontend and backend.
  • Experience with API integration (RESTful APIs, GraphQL, etc.) and working with backend teams to ensure smooth data flow.
  • Strong attention to detail and a passion for delivering high-quality, polished user experiences.
  • A collaborative mindset, with the ability to communicate and work effectively with both design and backend teams.

Bonus:

  • Experience with performance optimization (e.g., lazy loading, caching, etc.) to ensure fast load times.
  • Familiarity with DevOps tools or CI/CD pipelines to streamline the development process.
  • Familiarity with fintech or onchain products, particularly in building frontend experiences for financial applications.
  • Experience with testing frameworks (Jest, Cypress), or state management libraries (Redux, Zustand).

Process

Our hiring process is structured around 5 steps:

  • Screening [30 mins]: interview with a team member, deep dive into your background
  • Take-home technical case [max 2 hrs]: screening technical assessment for the position
  • Technical interview [1 hr]: discussion on the case, brainteasers, interview on job-specific skills
  • Cultural-fit interview [1 hr]: interview with potential future team members
  • Final interview [45 mins]: conversation with co-founders
